Abstract

In tribological studies the following points have to be noted; 1) While studying the tribological interaction it is important to study the interaction as close as possible to the actual interaction, 2) One of the factors that influence the data is the stiffness of the tribo-system and the use of force sensors is one of the factors that would influence the stiffness, and 3) The differentiation between “displacement controlled tribometry” and “force controlled tribometry” is also important. Many of the tribological interactions are force controlled, where a known applied force causes a displacement.

In this talk a force based tribometer is introduced and the results got from this tribometer is presented.  The tests are conducted under controlled temperatures and different slide-to-roll ratios.  The noise and vibration data due to the tribo-contact is also captured.  This is done with minimal noise contamination from external sources.

About the speaker

Professor Kailas obtained his B.Tech. from the Government Engineering College, Thrissur in 1987, M.E. and Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Science in 1989 and 1994, respectively.  He then carried out postdoctoral research at IISc till 1996 and was a Guest Researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA during 1996-97.  He is at IISc since 1997 and is today a Professor at IISc. He is also a visiting professor at the LEM3 laboratory, University of Lorraine, France.  He is carrying out research in tribology and severe plastic deformation (SPD). In tribology, he introduced the concept of “force-controlled tribology”. In SPD he has patented two processes that enables industrial-scale production of severely plastic deformed material.  He has published over 200 peer reviewed Journal articles and chapters in books.  He also authored the course on Materials Science for India’s NPTEL program. He has published a book “Liberation Through Education”.
